“GOD’S WORK. OUR HANDS.” SUNDAY

September 8, 2024

This day is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.

Service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: that all of life in Jesus Christ—every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life—flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace.

  1. Lutheran Social Services
We will collect new and gently used books to support LSS’s Youth Education and Employment Initiative, a job training and skills development program for former foster youth and formerly homeless youth ages 18–24 who reside in LSS of Northern California transitional and permanent supportive housing programs. Specifically, the program A Novel Idea, an online bookstore, enables youth to focus on attainment of living-wage employment and education completion, leading to lifetime self-sufficiency. Books may be left on the Lutheran Social Services table in Heritage Hall on September 8.

  2. Project Homeless Connect
We will collect the following items for Project Homeless Connect to distribute to walk-in clients: new adult backpacks, new white crew socks, new adult sleeping bags, unused and unopened travel size hygiene items. These items may be brought to the church and placed on the Project Homeless Connect table in Heritage Hall on September 8, or you may donate directly through their wish list on Amazon (https://smlc.live/PHCdonate).

  3. Greeting Cards for members and friends
Many of our members and friends find it difficult to be at St. Mark’s in person, so let’s tell them that we miss them, love them, are thinking about them, are praying for them, and want to reach out with a note that says what is on our heart. Names and addresses will be supplied, as well as greeting cards, pens, and stamps at the Write A Note table in Heritage Hall on September 8.

  4. Projects Around the Square
Work with our property committee and other volunteers to clean up, fix up, and spruce up the Sanctuary and St. Mark’s Square with loving care. People will gather at the Property Team table on September 8. Don’t hesitate to bring work gloves, tools, etc. that might come in handy for this work.

  5. Friends of San Francisco’s Animal Care and Control
The SF Department of Animal Care & Control is a taxpayer-funded, open-admission animal shelter providing housing, care, and medical treatment to wild, exotic and domestic stray, lost, abandoned, sick, injured, and surrendered animals. SFACC’s doors are open to all animals in need regardless of species, medical, or behavioral condition. Shop from the wish list registry on Amazon (https://smlc.live/SFACCamazon) for items not covered by the shelter's regular budget, or send the shelter animals much-needed and appreciated toys and treats from Chewy (https://smlc.live/SFACCchewy). Chewy has a wide variety of dog, cat, small animal, reptile and bird items that the shelter does not have the funds to purchase.  Items may be brought to the church on September 8 and placed on the Friends of SF Animal Care and Control table, or donated directly to SFACC.

See you on September 8!
