7:30 pm Journeys Through Revelation, Apocalyptic Hope for Today

An 8-week study on Wednesdays, taught by Pastors Elizabeth Ekdale and Christian Jennert

Revelation is one of the most difficult books of the bible, full of mysterious symbolism. Its twenty-two chapters can be intimidating. The message of Revelation is, most of all, one of hope. Come and explore this amazing, hopeful, and mysterious book of the Bible with the Pastors and one another. You will truly be surprised and inspired by studying this scripture in community. Cost: $10.00 to purchase the study guide which will be available on Sep. 12 at the Ministry Fair and at the first class.

Sabbatical Open House on September 11

Pr. Christian and his partner Christopher invite everyone for a dessert reception in the East Bay on Saturday, September 11 from 4-6 pm. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Two vans will be leaving from St. Mark’s for those unable to drive. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first come-first served basis. If you need a ride, please call the church office at 415.928.7770. To RSVP, please reply to your evite or call the church office.

Sacred Saturday, September 11 at 5pm

Come for a time of Evening Worship—contemplative, sacred, and communal. We will receive the Living Word through the Scriptures and the Eucharist, chant sacred songs and remain in prayerful silence.  Come and experience the Living Christ!

Ministry Fair on Rally Day, September 12

During the coffee hours on September 12, look for teams from Social Ministry, Education, Hospitality, Property, Stewardship, “Journeys in Faith”, Discipling and Outreach, Endowment, Youth, Ministry of Welcome and more to talk about their work on behalf of St. Mark’s. The fair will coincide with Rally Day, a time when we kick off a new year of programs and ministries, as we return to Sunday School, Adult Forum, Wednesday evening services, and more. The fair will also include Asante, the African Bazaar whose wonderful wares you have seen before. Please join us on September 12th for this very important day in the life of St. Mark’s!

Guitar players needed

The chapel music time at St Mark's, an all-kids singing time of 15-20 minutes at the beginning of Sunday School, needs guitar or other string instrument players to accompany basic songs that have a good dose of repetition. It would be great to have 2-3 players who could play on different Sundays through the Sunday School year. 2nd Mile Giving to Pakistan Flooding and Haiti Earthquake 6 months later

The ELCA is on the ground in Pakistan working with flood victims, and continues to do relief work in Haiti six months after the devastating earthquakes. Funds to ELCA Disaster Response will be used entirely - 100 percent - for the response efforts in these two places. Write a check to St. Mark's with either "Pakistan Flooding" or "Haiti Earthquake Relief" in the memo line. You could also write "ELCA Disaster Response" if you can't decide and want to let Disaster Response send the money where it is needed most. - St. Mark's Social Ministry

Adult Forum returns on September 19th

We welcome all to join in learning and exploring together. The first topic of the new Forum year is

Genetics: Power, Choice, and Responsibility, offered on September 19 & 26, with Dr. Margaret McLean in Heritage Hall

Instead of reading a common book over the summer, members of the class of 2014 at the University of California, Berkeley are being asked to swab the inside of their mouths for cells to be tested for genes associated with the metabolism of lactose, alcohol, and folic acid. The goal is to stimulate energetic conversations on campus about genetic medicine. Academic coercion perhaps? Medical recreation? Threat to privacy? Or, engaging academic exercise on the promises--and perils--of genetic advances? We can be comforted that the ELCA has not asked for a saliva sample but we are being asked to understand and comment on the Draft Social Statement on Genetics penned in response to genetics sparking "unprecedented and qualitative change in human powers" requiring "a greater level of human accountability for the future of society and nature." Come and discuss what it means "to respect and promote the community of life with justice and wisdom" when faced with choices about human genetic testing, gene therapy, stem cell research, and agricultural genetics. Dr. Margaret McLean, who has been an advisor to the California Senate Select Committee on Genetics, will facilitate our consideration of this draft social statement from the ELCA. Responses are welcome by the ELCA until October 15th.

Race to Nowhere Screening at St. Mark’s on September 23 at 7:00 pm

On September 23, there will be a screening of the documentary Race to Nowhere with a reception and Q&A with the film’s director Vicki Abeles. This new documentary examines the pressures faced by American schoolchildren and their teachers in our achievement-obsessed public and private education system and culture. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace; students have become disengaged; stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant; and, young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

To purchase tickets and for more information on Race to Nowhere, go to the home page of St. Mark’s website at www.stmarks-sf.org. The tickets are $15 ($16.99 w/service fee). You may select Will Call, Print-at-Home, or physical tickets.  We’ll see you on September 23!
