Parish Life Committees
Social Ministry
The Social Ministry Committee coordinates
and supports participation in a variety of community activities
throughout the year at St. Mark’s. We are very interested in
being an active member of our community and in providing
assistance to those of need in our city. St. Mark’s recently became a member of
BAOC, the Bay Area Organizing Committee. Through BAOC we will
work with other churches and organizations to determine and act
on issues of concern in our community.
St. Mark's is also a member of the San
Francisco Interfaith Council, and through this organization, we
participate with other churches and organizations in the annual
Winter Shelter for Homeless Men. St. Mark’s provides overnight
facilities a few weeks each winter for 65 men. Volunteers serve
breakfast each day and help coordinate and serve dinners
provided by other organizations each evening. We share our
social ministry concerns with our neighbor, St. Paulus Lutheran
Church.
Our women's WELCA group participates in
the preparation and serving of dinners at the Friendship Banquet
served at St. Paulus. The Friendship Banquet is provided for
people who have AIDS or are HIV positive.
Other activities include providing worship
services at a nearby nursing home, participation in fund raising
walks for various organizations, volunteering for Habitat for
Humanity projects, and supporting Sister Parish activities in a congregation in El Salvador. Please contact St. Mark's Lutheran
Church if you would like to join us in reaching out to our
community through our Social Ministry program. We welcome your
interest and participation.
Worship
Worship is at the heart of our life
together at St. Mark's. We welcome everyone and delight in all
kinds of diversity. Please join us! We provide two services with
Holy Communion every Sunday. The 9:00 A.M. service is a more
informal gathering, with a special children's time provided. The
11:00 A.M. service is our Choral Eucharist, a beautiful service
featuring lots of music as well as the opportunity for anointing
and prayer for healing. At both services, we are fed by Word and
sacraments, prayer and community, song and silence and God's
richest welcome to us all. Come taste and see how gracious the
Lord is -- for you! The St. Mark's Worship Committee allows
staff and interested members to gather for prayer, reflection,
and discussion of the significance of worship in our lives. Here
we debrief what is working well.
Education
The Christian
Education Committee is responsible for designing and running a
comprehensive education program for the St. Mark's community. It
aims to create an environment that presents every child, youth
and adult with opportunities to grow in a vibrant relationship
with God and God's creation and to serve and witness as Christ's
disciples. The committee envisions St. Mark's as a teaching and
learning community fostering experiences and relationships that
enhance each person's faith and action through prayer and study.
Please consider joining our committee or suggest programs or
topics about which you would like to learn more or teach.
Evangelism
The Evangelism
& Outreach Team works with the Associate Pastor in planning,
implementing and evaluating strategies to attract guests and
visitors and to provide follow-up contact. St. Mark's
Discipleship Classes for new members are coordinated and facilitated by
this committee. If you like to meet and welcome new people
to the St. Mark's community, this committee will be right
for you!
Property
The Property Committee is responsible for
all things relating to the administration, maintenance and
stewardship of the physical property of St Mark’s Lutheran
Church. This includes the church building, the Urban Life Center
(ULC), adjoining parking lots and the plaza between the Church
and the ULC. Currently the Property Committee has continued its
stewardship over the property of the church. Recently, the Property Committee actively oversaw the move out of the church building and into the ULC. Without the efforts of the Property Committee, we could never have begun our retrofit project. The continued activities of the Property
Committee are vital to maintaining St. Mark’s as a vital church
community within the city of San Francisco and establishing a
physical location from which our other Parish Life Committees
and Ministries can operate.
